Location
Often referred to as 'the nature island of the Caribbean', Dominica is located between the Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean sea. It is wedged between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. At 291 square miles, Dominica is the largest of the Windward Islands and the most northerly.

Government
The Commonwealth of Dominica is a parliamentary democracy, established on November 3, 1978.
The head of government is the Prime Minister. Honorable Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was sworn into office on January 8, 2004 and at the age of 32, he became Dominica's youngest Prime Minister.
The head of state is the President. His Excellency, the Honorable Eliud Williams, who was sworn in on September 17, 2012.
Independence
Dominica gained independence from the United Kingdom on November 3, 1978. That date is a national holiday. Dominicans in the diaspora commemorate Independence Day with a range of cultural and religious ceremonies.
